Finding an APE when you don’t have REAL

By: Sharlene Martin – Environmental Health

All students are required to finish an APE (Applied Practicum Experience) and most students complete it during the summer between their first and second year. When I started studying at Rollins, many students, staff and professors talk about the Rollins Earn and Learn (REAL) program and how that program helps students find APE opportunities. Despite the presence of this program, there are many students who don’t have the opportunity to be a part of this program. If you are like me who didn’t get the opportunity to be a part of the REAL program, you may be anxious about finding an opportunity. No need to worry, you will find an APE. Handshake is a good place to start applying for APE positions. Even though the position may say for REAL students, you can still apply and note that you don’t have REAL. If you are well qualified, you may have the chance to get an interview for the position.  This is how I found my APE. Another thing to note is that some students are worried about finding one when it comes January or February of their first year. January and February are quite early, as I didn’t find mine till the end of March which is still considered to be early. It is also helpful to reach out to professors and look at job boards outside of Handshake as there may be some other job opportunities outside of the university that could still qualify and provide you with invaluable resources and skills.
