By: Danielle Fitzpatrick -2nd year – Health Policy & Management
“The scramble for an internship is on!”…. This was my first thought after successfully completing my first semester as a Health Policy and Management student. My next goal was to find an internship to gain hands on experience. Although I am on the policy track, I wanted to learn more about managerial positions and their role in improving clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction and hospital productivity. I became interested in healthcare management and administration after my service trip to India. I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Leprosy Mission Trust Hospital. I was enamored with their management team who formulate policies, manage operations and finance, while providing high quality care to leprosy-affected patients.
During winter recess, I received an email from my ADAP about applying to the Directed Study Program (P.S. Department ADAPS send out great opportunities to all students so make sure you check your email!) After reviewing the program structure, I was excited to apply! As a Directed Study Program student, I am working side by side with an operations analyst to improve recruitment methods of Patient Service Coordinators while creating a new staffing methodology. At my internship, I’ve gained data analysis and project management skills while increasing my Excel skills. Additionally, my internship has allowed me to network more. I’ve met some amazing people along the way who are willing to answer my questions and connect me with their colleagues. I plan to continue my internship throughout the summer!
Tips:
- Check your email occasionally – there are some great internship opportunities throughout the semester and over winter break!
- Use your time wisely- I applied to a majority of summer internship opportunities over break (it gave me more time to edit my cover letters and resume)
- Learn as much as you can during your internship
- Don’t stress too much – you will find an amazing internship opportunity!
