Congratulations on choosing Rollins School of public health! There a ton of great things to do in Atlanta, from music festivals, art, and great food. Now that it is about the time to pick out classes and start thinking about what grad school life will look like, I thought I would walk you through a “day in the life” to highlight some of best locations I discovered in Atlanta, in addition to highlighting organization and courses at Rollins.
6 AM – 8AM Work out at Urban Body Fitness and Piedmont Park.
Although, we have two great fitness facilities on campus (Woodruff P.E Center and Clairmont Campus), I enjoy working out at local gym across the street from Piedmont park. Piedmont park has a number of trails, fields, and a small botanical garden, the park is great pit-stop for all of your fitness needs and is also hub for a lot of music and art festivals in the summer. Piedmont park is also connected to the Beltline, which is great for walking, running or any other of your fitness needs.
8 AM – 10 AM Breakfast or Study Time
Atlanta has some great coffee shops and breakfast locations throughout the area. Some of my personal favorites are Home Grown, and Octane Coffee.

Home Grown, is located South of Edgewood and your one-stop shop for a good Southern meal (I personally love their biscuits), although the lines are pretty long over the weekend its definitely worth the wait. Hailing from California, I am always looking for a good coffee shop. I absolutely love the esthetics of Octane Coffee and it has become one of my favorite study locations, and a great place for pastries. Iman Perk is also a great place to study, and get an assortment of coffee, tea, and pastries.

10 AM – 1PM Class Time
As a first year BSHE student, I have had the ability to engage with a variety of community stakeholders and learned core skills in quantitative analysis, theory, curriculum design, and evaluation. One of my favorite projects thus far was a formative evaluation for UNCF and Google to help create a pipeline program for Middle School students in relation to computer science. I am looking forward to taking community needs assessments and grant writing in the Fall! Here is full list of BSHE courses, as a resource.

1PM – 5 PM Work at the American Cancer Society
Through the REAL program, student have the opportunity to work at a variety of different organizations such as Care, The Carter Center, the CDC, and the American Diabetes Association. I currently, work as a Graduate Research Assistant at the Behavioral Research Center at the American Cancer Society, a few days a week in the afternoon. I currently work on a project identifying barriers to pain management from a socio-ecological approach. There is also a number of great volunteer positions through the Emory pipeline program and the Urban Health Initiative.
Although, this description was BRIEF, hopefully this gives you a taste of some fun projects/activities to get involved in within Atlanta.
